Introducing the Agroecology and Rural Economics Research Corps

St Paul, March 16–The Agroecology and Rural Economics Research Corps (ARERC) is an independent group of scientists, educators, and agricultural practitioners.

Its research and education programs address the agri-food system in the Upper Midwest in solidarity with farmers and other constituencies that have been left out, forgotten, or damaged by the current productivist paradigm.

ARERC’s aims are two-fold. First, it aims to provide analysis of the casual relationships between power—the socioeconomic and political apparatus as it is manifested by agribusiness and state institutions at large—and its concomitant effects on human, animal, and environmental well-being and productivity.

Second, the group helps conceptualize and implement alternate modes of production and exchange that contribute to, and aid in the regeneration of, agricultural landscapes for ecosystems and people alike.
